The Sheldon is getting ready for our 2nd annual Haunted House. Last years Haunted House was a huge success! We would like your opinion on what you would like to see this year. As we get closer to the date we will be posting photos and hopefully video on what to expect this year. Have a safe and fun Halloween!

Theatre Superstitions Part 1

Whistling:

Whistling on stage is considered bad luck because in the old days, original stage crews were hired from ships that were in port (theatrical rigging has is origins in sailing rigging) and coded whistles were used to communicate scene changes etc. Actors who whistled could confuse the stage crew into changing the set or scenery. This could result in a set piece or sandbag being dropped on the actor with distinctly unfortunate results. Although today cues are given via intercom or other signaling methods, it is still considered unlucky to whistle backstage, or clap for that matter.

One way to void the curse of whistling is to run around the theatre three times and knock on the door to be let back in. (seems to be the cure for most theatre curses)

So, if you are ever on or back stage remember this tale to avoid having to run around the theatre in the dead of winter.

An interview with the Red Wing Singers!

How long have you been a group?
The Red Wing Madrigal Singers were formed in 1961, becoming the Red Wing Singers in 1996. Original membership was 16 voices, having now increased to 32 voices.

What inspired you to do a 1960’s theme?
For a 2010 Concert theme, the Board met, reviewed what we had done in the past – 1920’s Speakeasy, 1940’s Radio Show, 1950’s show; we discussed all the great music of the ‘60’s, and decided it was time to do a ‘60’s show.

Where’s the most interesting place you have performed?
Among the interesting places we have performed are the St Nicholas Church in Prague; the Chapel of Christ the Servant in Coventry, England; with the local church choir at the Rugby Club in Laugharne, Wales; and the Performance Hall in Neuschwanstein (Cinderella’s Castle in Germany). When in Munich, a concert promoter came up to us after a thunderstorm had destroyed his band’s amplifiers, and convinced us to sing a few songs in the town square.

How do you become a member of the Red Wing Singers?
Membership in the group is by audition; the Director keeps a list of those interested, and contacts them for an audition when a position becomes available.

What is the funniest thing that’s ever happened at a performance?
As far as the funniest thing that has happened at a performance, I think the funniest moments are written into the script; I go back to some of the jokes and stories told during the show, and re-live the audience reaction and the joy we share with them.

Proceeded by the Sister Cities Fund-Raising Dinner (Tickets for the dinner must be purchased in advance and include the ticket to Hero)

Entr'Acte World Premiere

Tomorrow is the world premiere of the original romantic comedy "Entr' Acte" starring Red Wing's own local talent. This show is sold out but if you missed your chance to see this show there will be an encore showing Wed. December 16 at 7:00 pm.

Don't forget about the Gala after the movie at the St. James. Tickets are still available.

It's been a busy week getting ready for our season to start with the comedy troupe Second City. The stage is set, piano is tuned, programs are done and volunteer ushers are ready to go. Tickets are still available!

Two things start this month of Septmber:

1. This month I am very excited about the start of the Sheldon School of Performing Arts. Led by Julie Martin, who has expertly directed many workshops here for young performing artists, this school will nurture in students a sense of confidence and create an environment that encourages self-efficacious accomplishment. I look forward to having the vigor of youth energizing The Sheldon programming in the future.

The School starts with some after school workshops (fall and winter terms) and a few one time workshops. In the future, we hope to expand the classes to include more young people as well as adults.

2. The Sheldon is now starting to look at programming for the 2010-2011 season (September through May). We will be looking at all sorts of artists to bring to Red Wing and securing places on the schedule for local artists and performing arts groups.

Please let me know if you have any artists you would like us to look at. The 2010-2011 schedule should be wrapped up by March 2010 -- so until then, we are open to all suggestions.

Let me know, too, if you have any suggestions about operations here at The Sheldon -- how we can improve, how we can make your experience at the theatre better.

We are finishing up our summer season. Everyone has been supportive of our first film series and now we only have 3 chilling movies left to go.

Check out the next film Psycho (1960) Thursday August 13 at 7 PM.
